EDMONTON — Aecon Group Inc. (TSX:ARE) has been awarded a $109−million contract for additional construction work on the Sturgeon refinery project in Alberta, with work to be completed in the third quarter of 2016.

The refinery, about 45 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, is being built to convert bitumen from Alberta’s oilsands into higher−value products than produced by current upgraders.

Among the refinery’s products will be diesel fuel and diluent, which is used to soften the tarry oilsands material for extraction.

Aecon says its latest contract from North West Redwater Partnership, includes structural preassembly as well as installation of mechanical equipment and instrumentation.

The construction and engineering company was previously awarded a $230−million contract from North West Redwater for structural steel fabrication and module assembly.
