Privacy policy
At Canada’s National Observer we respect our readership and value personal privacy. We understand the nature of the information given to us and value the importance of protecting it in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act.
All personal information submitted to NationalObserver.com is kept confidential as described below and normally only viewed by Canada's National Observer's team. It is not sold or shared with any other organization or company without prior consent.
We do not disclose Personal Information to others, without first attempting to notify you.
We take reasonable steps to protect your Personal Information, to make sure only people authorized to access your information are able to do so. We reserve the right to disclose any information necessary to satisfy legal requirements, regulations, and government requests, or to preserve our rights.
What data do we collect and how do we use it
Subscriptions
We manage subscriptions with a third party service called Piano (https://piano.io).
Piano collects the following information:
- Your device ID (cookie or mobile ID), which is encrypted, or the IP address, which is anonymized. Piano doesn’t collect Personal Information unless you register an account.
- All standard business information provided by the Piano’s products: for instance, navigation data (browser and device type, type of events or content, …), behavior information (sources, navigation path, time spent on contents, …), information related to registered or subscribed users (first name, last name, email, …).
We use the information provided by Piano for audience data measurement, content orchestration, account management, and subscription processes.

Subscription payments are processed by Braintree or PayPal, depending on which payment method is chosen. Both services collect payment data and personal information in order to process payments. Donations
Our donations are handled by a third-party system called Donorbox (https://donorbox.org).
Donorbox collects personal information such as your name, address (if provided), and donation amount. It uses this information to send donation information to payment processors, and to list donation information in their application backend.
Donation payments are processed by Stripe or PayPal. Both services collect payment data and personal information in order to process payments. Newsletters
To manage our newsletters, we use a third-party service called MailChimp.
MailChimp collects personal information such as your name and email address when you sign up to one of our newsletters. Additionally, MailChimp collects information on newsletter opens and clicks to allow us to measure the response to our newsletters, so we can improve them.
We don’t share newsletter lists with third parties.

Analytics
We use Google Analytics to provide us with data on how our website performs. Google Analytics collects information such as user session statistics (e.g., how long you stay on the website), approximate geolocation, browser and device information. It does this by using cookies. The purpose of collecting and processing this data is to understand how our website performs, and how it is used by our readers/listeners/viewers. We use this knowledge and understanding to improve the design and functioning of the website.

Cookies
We and several of the aforementioned third-party services use cookies to identify your individual browser and assist in the site’s and services’ operation. Access to your data or data removal
Whenever made possible, you can access, update or request deletion of your personal data directly within your account profile settings. If you are unable to perform these actions yourself, pleasecontact us for assistance.
Data breaches
Despite our best efforts, a data breach is possible. In the event of a data breach coming to our attention, whether or not through our fault, we will immediately notify all persons whose Personal Information has been or may have been inappropriately hacked or disclosed, we will minimize the breach, and we will take steps to minimize foreseeable damage in the circumstances. We will keep those potentially affected abreast of our investigation and steps to mitigate damage.
