More than 150 years ago, American scientist Eunice Newton Foote was the first person to make the connection between carbon dioxide and planetary heating. But for as long as women have been involved in climate science – which is to say since the beginning – they have had to fight to be heard.
Fast-forward to 2020, and women all over the world are at the forefront of efforts to foster a sustainable environment. But as Jesse Firempong and Lydie Padilla write: “Where we aren’t seeing women, however, is in the Canadian government's green recovery plans.”
As the country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic and moves toward a green recovery, Firempong and Padilla argue the government’s plans should be gender-responsive and take into consideration those most impacted by the pandemic.
“A green transition has to include, support and listen to women," they write, "from a national child-care program that allows women to fully participate in building a green and just economy to jobs that address the she-cession.”
