Over the next five years Bill Gates plans to invest $1-billion in clean energy technology. The founder of Microsoft said that besides mitigating climate change, affordable clean energy will help fight poverty.

“I think this issue is especially important, because of all the people who will be affected by climate change, those in poor countries will suffer the most,” Gates said.

Gates’ personal investments will include companies working on new batteries and other storage methods as well as advances in solar technology.

He’s also working to commercialize a new form of nuclear energy technology that he asserts would be safer than previous sources and that would help eliminate the nuclear waste problem. “In my view, innovation is essential to human progress,” Gates says.
