Role Overview

This position offers the unique opportunity to work alongside Canada's foremost team of climate journalists in a warm and supportive workplace environment, engaging with the most climate-conscious audience across the nation. Our team boasts a dynamic mix of seasoned editors with decades of experience in journalism and some of the top emerging talents in Canada, fostering an environment of rich expertise and innovative perspectives.

Key Responsibilities

As CNO's newsletter essayist, you will craft thoughtful, engaging writing for our daily and weekly newsletters, driving readership and engagement:

  • Organize daily newsletter & write short teasers and opening essays
  • Write weekly business essay and launch a business newsletter in collaboration with our business editor and reporter
  • Help write text for proposals and fundraising material
  • Monitor and respond to trends in readership and engagement on our newsletters
  • Test new approaches to newsletter production and adjust strategies accordingly

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated track record of excellent, high-impact writing
  • Prolific, fast writer
  • Experience as a business reporter a plus but not required as long as you have strong reporting skills and are a fast learner
  • Understanding of Canada's climate policy landscape, politics, and business news
  • Knowledge in best practices for audience engagement
  • Strong verbal and written communicator who can help us tell our story in new ways
  • Understanding of the newsletter medium, from analytics to style
     

Salary & Benefits

  • Compensation: $71,000 annual salary ($34.15/hour)
  • Comprehensive Sun Life package (including mental health counseling, wellness funds, gender affirmation coverage, travel insurance, and $25,000 life insurance)
  • 12 paid vacation days plus 11 statutory holidays, plus paid office closure between Christmas and New Year
  • $125/month towards home office expenses
  • RSP matching (up to $1,500/year)
  • This is a bargaining unit position. The collective agreement between Observer Media Group (Canada’s National Observer) and the Canadian Media Guild applies ensuring annual 3% cost-of-living increases and robust support
