Energy board gives approval for liquified natural gas plant in Cape Breton

HALIFAX — The National Energy Board has issued export and import approval for a proposed liquefied natural gas facility in Cape Breton.

The approval was included in a letter sent Thursday to Bear Head LNG Corp., which is hoping to begin construction of the facility next year.

The Energy Board says it has determined the quantity of natural gas proposed to be exported by the company is surplus to Canadian needs.

The board also says evidence submitted by Bear Head LNG is supported by its own market monitoring, which shows the North American natural gas market is functioning effectively to match supply and demand and is expected to do so in the future.

Last month the company received export approval from the U.S. Department of Energy, and environmental approval was granted by the Nova Scotia’s Environment Department in May.

The company must address 32 terms and conditions to control greenhouse−gas emissions and to reduce impacts on wildlife, water and wetlands at the site near Port Hawkesbury.
