An important message from our founder and publisher

I’m writing to you in my role as founder and publisher of what I believe is one of Canada’s most important resources for understanding the climate crisis and taking action to prevent it from worsening. Although I’m in the final days of a retreat where I am technically supposed to stay offline, I’m compelled to be in touch. Canada’s National Observer is in the final days of our spring fundraising campaign, and we are still far from the amount we need to make our 2023 budget work.

My ambitions for Canada’s National Observer are high because the climate crisis demands big initiatives and radical visions.

Will you donate today to our $100,000 campaign to support and grow our award-winning journalism? Your help will mean we can shine the light of truth on what's taking place in the Canadian effort to fight the climate emergency. You can help us cover the good news as well as the bad. You can help us reach more people. Friends, the climate crisis requires vigorous, daily, in-depth climate journalism that is honest, relentless and insightful, and your donation can ensure you and fellow Canadians get the news you need.

I admit, I worry about the future. Today, as I’m writing, I’m breathing in wildfire smoke from Alberta and B.C., where unseasonably early forest fires rage. But I'm also hopeful. Hope is the energy that helps us see beyond despair and stay engaged in building the world we want to see.

As I look at the haze obscuring mountains and turning the clear sky white, I can either get depressed (really depressed) or I can let it inspire me. In this fog, I see more clearly than ever how important it is to do much more of the journalism that can help to rapidly transform Canada’s climate policy.

Many solutions — infrastructure, agriculture, building materials and transportation systems — already exist. All it takes is for our society to pivot and adapt. Quickly. As a born optimist, I believe that with knowledge, humankind will be able to do just that.

I’m eager to bring you more news about solutions and possibilities, while keeping close watch over the environment and politics that either block or promote smart policy and action. Canada’s National Observer is committed to provide you with stories to help you navigate the future.

We do it now. But with your donation, we can amplify and make our work even stronger.

I believe $100,000 is an achievable goal, but we need to raise it quickly. I hope you’ll join with our other readers and make a gift today. With your help, we’ll strengthen Canada’s National Observer’s accountability and solutions journalism.
