From Berlin Wall to today: Why journalism matters now

Support strong Canadian climate journalism for 2025

Help us raise $150,000 by December 31. Can we count on your support?
Goal: $150k
$36k

My formative years were buoyant and filled with optimism. The Berlin wall had fallen, an upwelling of wellbeing surged as democracies and economies provided peace, prosperity, and opportunity for all. Forty years later, a dark undercurrent of corporate and now state sponsored disinformation campaigns has surged to create populist memetic leaders who deny truth and destroy the fabric of our democracy. Canada is sadly not immune to these global tidal bores.

Canada’s National Observer provides rigorous evidence-based journalism that demands our attention and invites citizens to demonstrably think and defend our democracy. Never in my time has this been so urgent a responsibility for the everyday person. As they work to reach their winter fundraising goal of $150,000, I urge you to stand with me and support the National Observer with a donation. It is a meaningful act of citizenship, a promise of custodial care of our democracy.

For the truth will always require the clarion call of the town crier. The National Observer is our nation's crier: their work calls upon us to nurture and defend our democracy. Your contribution to their winter campaign will help ensure they can continue to fulfill that vital role —  every dollar brings us closer to their $150,000 goal and strengthens the foundation of factual, independent journalism our democracy needs.
