A Haitian-Canadian Liberal MP is trying to dispel myths circulating among Haitians in Miami, Fla. that they'll get a "free pass" into Canada if they cross illegally.

Despite growing criticism, Prime Minister Trudeau insisted his government has been up to the task and that new measures are yielding "positive results".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will participate Wednesday in a Montreal meeting with the federal-provincial task force charged with managing an unprecedented flow of asylum seekers.

"There are mixed feelings in our community on what we think they should be doing and shouldn’t be doing," said Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy.

Television footage showed them marching in silence near Quebec City's legislature.

Some of the asylum-seekers who have recently crossed the Canada-U.S. border say they're struggling to find a place to live once they leave government-run temporary shelters.

Officials in Montreal have opened a new temporary shelter for asylum seekers in a building that once housed a convent.

Several in the crowd said they had come to Canada as immigrants themselves and wanted to show their support for the newcomers.

"I have 35 years of of service, I have worked 18 years as an agent on the field at the border and I have never seen anything like that," said Jean-Pierre Fortin, president of the agents' union.

The Category 3 hurricane skidded along the Florida coast Friday morning, and has turned its attention northward toward Georgia and the Carolinas.
