Peter Wood is a co-founder of the Coalition for Environmental Rights, and the former national campaign manager for the Blue Dot Movement for Environmental Rights at the David Suzuki Foundation. Over the past twenty-five years Peter has campaigned on a wide variety of environmental and human rights issues, both within Canada and internationally.
A rights-based approach can address environmental threats to Canadians
In a historic move, the United Nations Human Rights Council recently voted in favour of recognizing the right to a healthy environment. This right has already been recognized by 156 countries. Canada is not yet one of them.
Why we need environmental rights
Research has shown that recognition of a right to a healthy environment results in stronger environmental laws, better enforcement of those laws and a greater public role in environmental decision-making.
